How much does it cost a woman to be beautiful in Amman?

Beauty and the financial crisis

I have been always fascinated by the beauty industry in Amman. It is available, affordable and professional. But what fascinates me most is that it is thriving and on the rise despite of the financial crisis.   For this post, I asked several “Salons” how their business is doing with the financial crisis; their answer did not fail me…  “Never better” every time!

Apparently, there is an increase in the demand for beauty services during times of financial instability. One possible explanation is that since women can’t afford much anyway, they spend their money on fun stuff… What I call retail therapy. But I suspect instinct plays a bigger role here.

What do women do in times of crisis?

I found this very interesting quote. The oldest adage about fashion and the economy is that hemlines rise and fall with the stock market. If we analyze this a bit deeper, we will realize that women are survivors… they need to take care of themselves and their offspring. Therefore they need to feel good about themselves, especially in times of crisis.

If they don’t have partners, they need to attract the right ones, and if they do, they have to keep them… and how better than recreating themselves in times of crisis? This way women make sure there will be someone will do the hunting …. or put food on the table in our modern times…. Now what kind of beauty do we seek?

Well, well, well…Media bombards us with images of slender, young and flawless women offering products that bring back youth in the best cases and preserve it in the worst. This evidently fuels insecurities among women, whose perceptions have been altered to believe that youth is the only acceptable form of beauty. Consequently, we are driven to beauty parlors, hoping to stop time in order to stay young and beautiful. But wait how does that affect us in Amman? and how much does it cost us?

I was talking to my sister in law, a beautiful young woman who celebrates her beauty. We were expressing our shock at the unbelievable increase in prices in beauty industry.  This comes after a visit to trim my hair, something that I seldom do.  I keep postponing that trip to till there is really no option.  The thing with me is that I really get restless sitting on a chair for an hour while someone is pulling my hair with a roll brush and exposing it to extremely hot air…however this is not the point here.

The point is as we were talking, we started calculating how much it costs to stay beautiful all the time… R. started calling her friends, and i started calling salons to get quotes… we gathered around twenty five voices, and ten quotes… a very small group…

The prices I am naming here are average…not fixed… think of it as more or less… we are talking about average western Ammani women …   Here we go

Item

Period

Yearly

Hair Care

Hair Blow drying (some people do it once a week, so divide this number by two)

2 per week: 7 JDs

728

Full Dye, highlights, roots

once every three months at 50 JDs

200

Hair Oil (bath)

One a month at 15

180

Trimming

once every three months 10 JDs

40

Body care

Full body wax

Once a month at 22

264

Nails

Once a month at 16

192

Total: 1,604 JDs a year

We still have not talked about essential care products that average women use…

Item

Period

Year

Hair care products Shampoo and conditioner since a lot of women do not wash their hair at all at home it is always done at the beauty parlor! Creams, gel, mousse, spray, oils, wax,

30 (every 6 months)

60

Body care products including Body creams, Body wash, body oils, anti cellulite creams, Summer skin care kit (sun lotion, bronzer) Hands cream , feet care kit ( special creams)

100 a year?

100

Face care products including Eye creams, special make remover, masks, day and night creams, moisturizers) Face cleaning products (including, scub, toner, cleaner, masks) Face creams ( including night cream, day cream, everyday moisturizer, special sun lotion) Sweat proof lip and cheek stain.. these are so damn expensive!

(that is definitely not less than 100 every 3months

400

Make up (all colors nail polish, polish remover, nails kit ) blush, lipsticks, lip balms, mascaras eye liners, concealers, eye shadow…

Lets say 20 JDs a month

120

Perfumes and Deos

 About 60 every year?

60

Total: 740 JDs a year

Of course we still have not talked about clothing, shoes or gym and special diet food… if someone is a tad more careful… but just FYI… Dietitians cost about 40 JD’s a month (10 JDs a visit) and Gym about 85 every three months… so we are talking about 820 JD

So how mush does that amount to?  3,164 JDs

Not bad, eh?

  • So basically women in Jordan spends their income on beauty, gym and child nursery instead of playing their role as mother and then they shout for equality.

I bet that men spend similar amounts on even less important stuff… movies, accessories for their cars, mobiles…electronics…I don’t know…you probably know better.

… maybe if more men spend more of their time being good fathers, then women won’t be forced to shout for equality…

And by the way.. this is not all women in Jordan… We are tlaking about less than 10% of women in Jordan.

  • :S how many women do you know who spend this much money on their beauty? I’m shocked, and if I were a guy I’d be scared shitless… seriously, a lot of the stuff listed are unnecessary or can be done at home. I probably spend like %10-20 of the total amount you computed and I would like to think that I take a good care of my beauty.

But this is very interesting indeed.

Shaden… actually quite a few :) … yeah… women pick and choose of these items… i just heard there is a new trend, which is adding extentions to your hair… apparently extentions cost arounf 250 JD, plus servicing!

So yeah… i will stick to the more or less stand :)

  • Interesting. I kind of thought this was headed toward talking about inflation. The gal I use (hair cut only) started at 4JDs three years ago and is now up to 7. Talk about inflation!

For me, I spend probably 1% of your amount, but then I’m not average… Teehee. Thanks for the perspective.

interesting indeed! prices increased tremendously… these Salon Madams (and Sirs) know their economy… they know when and how much they should increase prices…

Actually i spend around 10% of that amount… but it increases with time… :)

thank God I was born a malea!

    i cut my hair once a month…for 5jds

    that’s 60jds a year

    then you have shampoo..maybe three bottles a year…that’s 12jds

    total…72jds

(guys who use hair gel probably spend 3jds a bottle for every month…that’s 36jds)

interestingly enough, the old haircut average for males was 2.5jds (in west amman including wadi sayr) and now the new average is 5jds. i guess rent costs went up or barbers just saw an opportunity to increase prices during the lengthy inflationary period of the past few years.

ok… but how much money do men spend on movies? gadgets? electronics?

Sorry to hear about the new average prices :) Finally they caught up with women, when it comes to prices!

The article is sexist, misleading and biased.

Men spend as much (if not more) money on similar services and even still, the numbers mentioned here don’t account for all females in Jordan (the article acts as if ALL women adhere to these standards).

    Madas Reply:

Thanks for the comment… I am not talking about men here… I am talking about women… I am sure men spend similar amounts on different stuff. Actually it would be nice to find out what men spend their money on.

As for the all females in Jordan, looks like you did not read the article closely. No one said that this covers all women in Jordan. I stated clearly that this covers average west Ammani women… which anyway is not representative of all Jordanian females.

  • I’m about the 10% range of this amount.

It seems about right for my age-group.

I am not sure it is age related… i spend 10% of that amount as well :)

  • In times like these I say thank god for hijab.

On a serious note, this is a totally interesting post. 4 years ago I paid 25 dollars for a haircut in deep south USA. Last summer I paid $45 right before going to Irbid where my cousins paid 5 JD. Then 3 months ago I paid $65 (same salon but with different stylists). I’m currently saving up for the next one because my frayed dead ends are chipping off.

I remember watching a recent Oprah episode about the concept of beauty around the world. If you think the west ammani trend is excessive, imagine that the average working Brazilian woman spends half her income on beauty! Plastic surgeon practices have made accessible all kinds of financing plans so that a Brazilian female from the most modest means can obtain surgical enhancements.

    Reply

    Madas Reply:

Thank you for your comment. It is inspriring to know what women in other nations do…

For me, there is something sad about the way we lead our lives in west Amman…I was shocked to find out the number, but so was my sister in law who inspired me to write this post.

I think, we are probably going towards the Brazilian model.. plastic surgery here in definitely on the rise, so are more complex procedures, such as Lazer to remove hair, or Botox…

I don’t know if it is right or wrong, I mean sometimes i think, there are women who can’t go to sleep because their kids are starving, i feel it is not wrong, but obscene!…

But then i think, if W.Amman women do their duty for their societies, give to the poor, do charity and they can afford it, and it makes thme feel happy about themselves then why not?

And heavens forbid “CHarity” you can’t wear charity around your neck or your wrist and show it off as a sign that your husband loves you soooo much! No way, a lot of fickle women (not all of you are that) join charities to get “in” with the “In-crowd”, some do it out of a general true feeling of giving back to the community, others don’t.
That aside, it is every womans priviledge to beautify herself, trust me if you were all hairy and unkempt no man will look at you men are simple fickle visual creatures who impressed by the superficial.

While i agree that many women in amman spend a lot of money on upkeep, let me say that it’s practically demanded of women to appear ‘put together’ in this city. heaven forbid peeling nail polish should see the light of day, or hair that’s not msashwar perfectly out on the weekend. The pressure, frankly, is unrealistic. The thing is, the ones who are judging and expecting to see immaculate women are none other than the men (not all, but most) that live among us. it’s a prerequisite for most of them. and it’s ridiculous for some of us, namely me.

All that being said, I have to point out a growing trend among women here – it hasn’t yet taken ammani girls by storm, but i have a feeling it’s on the up. How about the DIY (Do It Yourself) crowd? Don’t they factor in? it doesn’t necessarily have to be ’spend money and look good’ or ‘don’t spend and look 3adi’

I, like most people, like to look nice most of the time, but usually that doesn’t require spending thousands on things like the salon and manicures. With a simple hair iron, a nail file, and a few carefully chosen youtube ‘how-to’ clips, tons of time and money can be saved.

    spread the word.

I agree with you completey, but there is one point though that i would like to comment on… it is not men who expect women to be perfect… it is other women!

I mean of course there are a few men, who like to see women looking ravishing, but this pressure only comes form other women.

A friend of mine ( a man by all starndards) asked me recently, why do women apply nail polish?! he was like, I understand the hair, the face, the body wax… but colouring body parts (i.e. nails in this case) is incomprehensible to me!

I was surprised, i did not see that was coming, but it got me to think that maybe we do all this to be compared to other women, and not to please men!

i agree that women definitely check each other out and to a certain degree judge each other, but being a woman in this city and having a number of male friends, i have to disagree and say that it is indeed the men that expect the looks to be up to par.

they may not admit it outwardly, but the comments they make under their breath after ‘unkempt’ (by their standards) float by, i have come to learn that they do indeed want a woman that looks like the image we’ve been programmed to believe is attractive. they may not want colors on the nails necessarily, but they certainly notice when those nails are broken and unfiled, or if eyebrows are a bit overgrown. Trust me, i understand that women look at each other, but the men are the ones that the women do it for at the end of the day. Women buy handbags for other women, but they do their hair for the guys.

    take it from a lady.

I believe you :) actually someone commented once on how the culture in Amman is very macho… the indication is that you see a beautiful diva walking with a khanshour!

The thing is as someone who calls gender equality… I blame women if what they do is to live up to men’s expectations… I don’t see men living up to women’s expectations… they simply don’t care… and we accept them and love them and go out of our way for them…

Maybe women should start doing things because they make them feel good about themselves (i.e. I like to apply make up because I like to look good) rather than (I want to apply make up so that X and Y think I am good looking) and then if men like it Ahlan wa sahlan and if they don’t …. no problem… they can learn!

As one of the profiteers of said beauty industry I was reading your piece and thought to myself this I should comment on.

We live in a town that survives on “Mazaher” (Appearances), we see Mrs. X and know full well she’s living on credit since they barely have 2 fils to rub together, yet there she is in the salon lording it over the employees, and I do not blame her “Look good feel better” is a good philosophy.

I’ve worked as beauty Editor for several magazines here in Jordan and Abroad, and what makes me livid in some editors is that they are LAZY they do not care about the reader, they persume everyone reading their magazine is filthy rich and will buy the products online, instead of researching the products and actually reading about them not foisting them on people like some glorified shopping catalogue, if I needed a .com address I’d buy Vogue or elle, but I make no such assumptions, I tailored each and every article to fit into 3 categories. First category: The Absolutely Ridiculous (ex. 1000 JDS for a cream). Second Reasonable (Upper range yet affordable for splurging). Third the Thrifty (Products that actually work and will not make you mortgage your house). YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY EXPENSIVE CREAMS SUPERMARKET BRANDS WILL DO!

As for you women, its a vicious battlefield you tread especially if you are unmarried, some women who are married drop their single friends because they’re scared they’ll poach them from them it has been known to happen. And the psychological strain that goes with this constant observation under a microscope terrible. And still the Onus is on you women to look good, while the male can look like a toad and still snag a “looker” True love nay true finance!

And as for the cost of living beautifully in Amman, lets compare eyebrow shaping in amman 10 JDS? In London no less then 70 pounds (and this was quite a few years back), you girls still have it great here is what I am saying, when you compare the price of a good haircut in the USA 300 USD from a good stylist.
And the prices will continue to rise I personally charge no less than 60 JDS for a “Normal” make-up and it goes up from there depending on the work needed, but then you are paying for 25+ years of experience both abroad and here and frankly I find it offensive when I am told my prices are too high, they are not!
I paid for a very expensive education twice over, and it wasn’t in Lebanon it was London and Hollywood. So let me be arrogant and say when you pay my price you are assuredly getting not the best in the world (I can name hundreds better than me) but I do rank within those hundreds, and that is what you are paying for a certain gurantee of quality and personalisation in your look, and not some production line offering.
And in the end we ALL have to make a living and its about survival. That was my little outpouring!
This was a view from the other side of the fence!

First of all, thank you for your comment… Second of all congratualtions on your good business sense!

I would like to know more about Supermarket brands work theory…. do they really? can someone on low income still have a youthful skin by applying cheaper brands?

For the princess and toad! ahhh i don’t know where to start… i think this is something women bring upon themselves… we accept and then get angry if men don’t put the same effort… obviously the answer to why women accpet is extremely complicated… but anyway…. yes women look beautiful but they marry a man for his bank account and not his personality traits (this is a generalizations, not all womena re like that… actually a small percentage… but this is reality)

I am not sure how to respond to your prices not being expensive… i am not one of you clients or even your target clients! i lived in Europe too long to make my life revolve around beauty…which is a shame since i like to look nice… but honestly won’t be able to afford applying make up for 60 JD! this is unthinkable to me!

However, if women like it, and if they can afford it… why not? i do agree with you at the end of the day it is about survival!

I will end by congratualting you again… a smart guy who knows his market… i wish you more and more success!

(I’ll let you in on a little secret here, repeat customers get a good discount, hook them and reel them in I say! Am not too greedy!) :-D
And I lived in scnadinavia based in copenhagen for more than 15+ years, and even with my prices I had good clientelle, its just that sometimes a woman is willing to shell out on looking and feeling good, and as I say to people hire me to teach you make-up and I can guarantee you will not need a make-up artist after that.

The cost of all those services you listed is so much more anywhere else. You can do most of the services you listed at home anyways, and it’s not so much about the cost it’s about the norm of what beauty has become.Mostly beauty is confused with style, no variety is appreciated, everyone has the same look and if it changes it changes as a society sweeping fad. Kaif ya3nny ana mish msashwereh sha3ri o emankereh adafri orange now sho 3aib!!

Both Men and Women in Amman are very judgmental and have very narrow perspective of what looking good means. Ammani men think they are God’s gift to women and Ammani women behave like they are naturally they are ugly and need SO much work and upkeep.

Woman If he can’t love you for you he’s not worth it and if you can’t love yourself naked fresh out of the shower then you have issues that no hairdresser nor makeup can fix.

Jordanian men do think they are God’s gift to humanity… but only because women allow them to think that! and the reasons are very complex!

More women than men, lack of social welfare, strict social rules placed upon women, and, and and…

Therfore, yes there is competition on resources here! I think it is idealistic and beautful to think that… but it does not always work…it is hard to be living in a society whever everyone expects you to be perfect… it takes a very strong personality, a very unique sense of individuality… which is neither encouraged nor promoted.

    madas,

sorry, but i’m pretty sure ‘allow’ is the incorrect word in this situation.

women absolutely do not ‘allow’ men to feel that they’re ‘god’s gift to humanity’.. and the reasons you stated in terms of social restrictions and the ratio of men to women are, if i’m not mistaken, completely out of the control of women.

if you visit any major metropolitan city around the world, you’re likely to find the same complaints from women there.

and as for your reply to my last post, i have to say that i think you missed my point. i wasn’t at all saying that women want to look good entirely for men and that we want to ‘live up to their expectations.’ and i think that placing ‘blame’ on either gender for our current dynamics is a grave mistake.

males, females – no one is at fault necessarily. it’s just the cookie crumbling. and it will continue to crumble forever.

thank you for opening up a forum for discussion on a topic that’s vastly misunderstood in amman.

  • With so many beauty related activities, do Ammani women have enough time left over to sleep? ;)

I think your theory about women spending more on beauty products during hard economic times to help them attract successful men is a good one. It also may be true in America. I was watching a documentary about the history of the cosmetics industry. During the Great Depression of the 1920’s and 30’s, women here also spent more on cosmetics. However, someone suggested the reason was that women needed something to help them feel better, and buying lipstick, for example, was something that most women could afford, even poor ones.

I know that standards of beauty have changed over time. All the art by the great masters from a few centuries ago depicts plump women. I have heard speculation that plumpness, or even gross obesity, was a sign of wealth and health back then. So, that might explain why plus sizes were popular. I’m not sure if I have been brainwashed by skinny models in advertisements, but I have always been attracted to thin women. I have known a few guys who really love big women though, and I’m sure they have seen all the same ads. So, maybe its just my instinctive preference.

  • nope..its a fact, men pay all these beauty bills to their wives, even on the dating scene we usually pick up the tabs so one way or another we always end up paying.

and those things you mention do not compare to the scale of spending on beauty, ya3ni for example almost non of my friends ever modified or systemized their cars, yes such ppl do exist but not on a large scale.

I’m talking specifically about Jordan, and Jor men are not involved much in personal hobbies that I could generalize and say that their main spending target is argeeleh/with shadeh among friends. We do need more focusing on hobbies here but that’s another discussion.

If you want to disagree more, you can buy me dinner and prove my theory wrong :P

Cleopatra did it by wallowing in bath of milk and such beauty treatmens; and also Roman and Greek women (and men!) spend enless time on their beauty in bath and such and kept beautiful as long as possible, though all defeated in the end.

But woman are monstrously indoctrinated by advertisements and the hype to be beautiful as value per definition, leaving everybody out who is not as if there is ONE beauty that can be loved, surpassing the ugly who are loved and the superb natural beauty without any artifical help of millions of women as no doubt Jordania, in Iran, in Afghanistan, in Europe world-wide in fact that contrast to women appearing mighty unnatural to ugly with blown-up lipes and tits like cows because of beauty treatments.

A joke is a man who finds his ‘ideal beautiful woman’ peeled off make make-up with her beauty scrubbed down to that of a ‘peasant woman’.
