Mawtini Palestinian Anthem (60 years of nakbeh)
Mawtini” My homeland” was unofficially the anthem used by Palestinians, written by Ibrahim Touqan and composed by the Lebanese composer Mohammad Flaifel. This should not be confused with Biladi, the official anthem.

Mariam, I am somewhat troubled by this Anthem. It sounds like a call to arms and violence. You know that I am no fan of Israeli policies toward Palestinians, but how can these words help to promote a peaceful and cooperative future?

I didn’t know the meaning of the word, so I looked it up and did some reading here:

This is an interesting site dedicated to preserving memories and photographs of Palestinians with regard to the events of 1948. I didn’t know that the number of Palestinians forced from their homes was 750,000. It was a human catastrophe and I wish it had not happened. The creation of the State of Israel has caused a lot of human misery in the last 60 years. But, history can’t be undone. I just hope that there can be found a just and equitable solution that both Israelis and Palestinians can live with.

This anthem was written in the thirties, even before the State of Israel was created. It was written when Palestine was under the British occupation, where people have suffered a lot…

Is there a video of a group of young Palestinian men and women singing Mawtini? The only one I’ve found is a group of young Algerians and it is impressive. but how about a group of Palestinians? Has no one recorded such a video?
