A message from the grave

I have not thought about Reem in a while. Actually, I am a bit dazzled that it has been 2 years since she passed away. I ran into her aunt a couple of days ago. I asked after Reems’s family. I sort of developed an odd kind of friendship with the family under the circumstances.

Suha told me that Reem’s parents had a baby boy… it was totally unexpected, as they are in their forties. Still, they are ecstatic about little Yusuf.  They felt he is a gift that has been sent to them from God to compensate for the pain they felt for losing Reem.

Suha told me that her sister (Reem’s mother) dreamt about Reem one night during her pregnancy.  She asked her to name the boy Yusuf after someone she met. She explained that Yusuf is buried next to her.  Needless to say, the mother could not wait for the day to break in order to drive to the grave yard.  There, she found Yusuf lying next to Reem.

I don’t want to get all philosophical about this.  It could be simply that the mother saw the grave and internalized the name without realizing it… but to play the devil’s advocate here…is it possible that the dead try to get in touch with us through dreams and other means? Could it be possible that the dead meet and visit each other and have a life of their own, a life that is totally separate from the one we have here? if so, what kind of life is it? Do the same rules that apply here apply there? Are there notions of haram and 3eib in this life? Do they have religions, politics, societies, communities, identities, nationalities, sexuality? Do they have the same elements that make us humans? Is it the next stage after life on earth?

Is death a religious thing? is it civil? human?

I just thought about Memnoch the Devil….

  • “Is death a religious thing? is it civil? human?”

I think it’s scientific. In some theories, the past, present, and future all co-exist. Therefore, the dead are not “dead and gone” but merely exist in a different shape and in a different state. I think if we believe this to be true, then it is possible for them to reach out to us, and for us to travel through time at one point.

  • There was a time that I have been very intrigued by life after death, I read/watched a lot about it.
I came into a conclusion that all science/religion/sci-fi particularly things related to Aliens, all view death and life after death from the same perspective which could very much sum up to the theory Tololy mentions.
It’s fear of the unknown that scares us,and the fact that no one has come back to tell us whats there, and if someone comes back, thanks but I’ll spare meeting him and just wait till its my time to go.

Before I click post let me add that “life is too short” /hint to my previous posts on this blog.

    Well,
i do believe in the fact that dead people send messages to their loved ones on earth, i do believe that such messages are sen either by dreams, signs or just actions done by other people.
but i am not sure about the kind of life you were wondering about! i mean, as i re-call from my tiny readings about this issue, that hey do have a life in their graves, depending on their deeds, or sins, but still, you need to check with the experts ( the ones who read deeply about death ).

I like how you consider death scientific… it did not occur to me :) I had a conversation with a friend who does not want to be burried in a religious ceremony, since he spent his life not religious… he wants his life to be celebrated when he dies… a nice notion i think.

I guess you are right. It is that no one came back to tell us… it is the fear of the unkown and the lack of knowledge… I am very curious about death myself… but like you i will wait till my time comes to indulge!!!

Before i click add comment “life is too precious to be wasted being curious about faceless people…. what i am saying is you need to become a 3D charachter before your hints are internalized :)

I don’t know… maybe you are right.. it kind of makes sense that people don’t just disappear, that they have ties with this life… who knows… i am curious what kind of experts would know about these things? scientists? religious?… i don’t know…

  • Mariam, your story about Reem was very touching, especially the way that her father took care of her and mourned her loss. I am glad to hear that her parents have another child. Whether Reem actually came to her mother in a dream is not important. Her mother found comfort in her belief that Reem spoke to her.

I don’t know what happens when we die. I believe that human consciousness is in part composed of energy that jumps from one neuron to another that is amplified by the power of billions of neurons transferring their energy simultaneously. However, death quiets the brain. The transfer of energy ceases. So, I don’t know how a person’s consciousness could survive death. Still, I would not mind if I am somehow wrong.

David, I hope you are wrong… there is so much comfort in the idea that we don’t just cease to exist… i hate the idea that i will be no more, that my life will mean nothing, that nothing will mean nothing… that we only get one chance and that is in this life…

I agree with you… Reem’s mother was very worried about the fate of her daughter after her death, and when she told her that she has a friend called Yusuf, she was very happy… she said at least she knows the girls is not alone, that she has friends… the whole thing is very touching.

  • I don’t think that anyone’s life means nothing. We all create meaning by interacting, by helping each other, by creating new things that can benefit future generations. Think of the theme of the movie “Pay It Forward”. Each small action we make in the world spreads out like ripples in a pond and triggers other small actions and responses. Just saying a kind word to someone may lead to a ripple effect that saves someone’s life. It is possible. More personally, your friendship has been good for me. So, you mean something to me! :)
