Palestine in the heart or somewhere else

I have been watching this Ramadan series on TV it is called he Palestinian Relocation (Al-taghreebeh falastinieh). I started because I heard from three older people that they REFUSE to watch it! It is a very nice series that describes the good and the bad in the life of one family in some village in the Palestinian countryside. And through them it narrates the story of Palestine in the last 100 years. For my elderly friends,The palestine of my generation is not more than a nice dream. They tell me that the palestine in their hearts is the Palestine of 50 years ago that no longer exists.

My Grandma was telling me that back in 1948 on the day they were evacuated, she was making marmalade and left the pot boiling on the stove because they were going back in couple of hours. The marmalade goes on boiling till today. A neighbor of hers, and in the confusion of the situation has left one of her 7 kids sleeping there… the little boy goes on waiting in his little bed wondering when is mommy coming back. And then I understood why people like her refuse to watch this show. These same people refuse to go back if the door is opened because they are too frightened to see what happned to the palestine that lives in their hearts. Murred Barghouthi wrote a beautiful book about this very idea called I saw Ramallah

Obviously, this is absolutely nothing, compared to all the lost dreams, and crushed hopes and the misery you hear when you talk to a Palestinian family still waiting in some refugee camp.

One of the best books ever written about the Palestinian history is a book called the Iron Wall, ironically written by Avi Shlaim who happens to be an Israeli Jew. (I am not going to go trough the difference between Israeli, Zionist and Jew. For people like my Grandmother it is the same thing). Another good lawyer for our case would be Edward Said. Any of his books is great.

It saddens me that the situation changed from living in Palestine to Palestine living in us!

    Hey madas,

It's our generation responsibility to keep Palestine alive, in us and until the end of the world.

Although last time I've been allowed to go to my homeland (Tolkarem, Palestine), probably these memories are the only that I carry with me and never forget. Now I have three kids, and whenever I get a chance to talk about what they are missing there, you can't imagine how they pay attention although the eldest is not more than 6 years old.

Anyway, I noticed that your blogging is little. To be honest, I came across your blog some time ago from Jordan Planet, but it was a while since I checked, coz every time I do, it was outdated. Hope you keep posting more frequently. And also wish that you join the crowed of other nice bloggers.

Keep in touch, and sorry I could not find your email anywhere to send this note.

    Best regards,
    Haitham

let me just say that i really thank you for making the palestine issue the first article in your journal, if it shows anything it shows that our youth still rememebers palestine “the dream”. plus i totally beleive that the media has the biggest influence on the people and the way they think and what they beleive in, thats why i think of the series which is basicaly trying in a very good way to display what did the palestainian had to go through in the past 100 years is one of the ways to refresh the dusty memory of all of us, and again because the media is the secret weapon. every where a lot of the leading countries claming to be the “mother of democracy” use it to blind there one people and twist the truth to their own interests?? thats why i think that a simple series and a brilliant journal like yours can help in ways that you could never beleive, simply because when you want to seek the truth no one and i mean no one will ever stop you from digging deeper.

i strongly beleive that its our genertaion's responsability to try in all ways and means to keep the dream “palestine” from fading away.

take care honey and keep up the good work:)
